BRCC's Commercial Driver's License Program
Aims to Alleviate Looming Truck Driver Shortage
BATON ROUGE, La. - In response to a critical nationwide shortage of truck drivers, Baton Rouge Community College (BRCC) is relaunching its Commercial Driver's License Program, aimed at training individuals for a rewarding career in commercial driving. The initiative comes as the trucking industry faces a daunting projection of being short by approximately 160,000 drivers by 2030.
Based at the BRCC location on Rosedale Road in Port Allen, the Commercial Driver's License Program is set to play a vital role in addressing the looming truck driver deficit, according to BRCC Chancellor Dr. Willie E. Smith.
"Baton Rouge Community College is excited to provide this opportunity for individuals seeking a rewarding career in commercial driving while actively contributing to the solution for the nationwide truck driver shortage," Chancellor Smith emphasized. "The trucking industry is the backbone of our economy, and by training skilled and safety-conscious commercial drivers, we not only provide a promising career path for our students but also contribute to this vital industry."
The program offers a comprehensive curriculum that covers a range of essential topics, including Department of Transportation regulations, driving on diverse types of roadways, cargo handling, vehicle inspections, maneuvering skills, and defensive driving techniques.
"Theory, which is a two-week classroom process, and we'll come out here, and it'll be four weeks backing and on the road," explained Jason Butcher, a former truck driver who will serve as an instructor within the program.
Committed to upholding the rigorous standards of the Department of Transportation and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Entry-level driver training, the Commercial Driver's License Program will span six weeks and combine in-person classes. Classes are scheduled to commence on Monday, October 30, at the BRCC Port Allen location on Rosedale Road, with a training cost of $5,500.
Once participants successfully complete the program, they can test for a CDL Class A (tractor-trailer) or CDL Class B (straight truck) license.
