Baton Rouge, La. – Dr. Jose U. Toledo was named the Vice Chancellor for Research at the Southern University Ag Center during the Southern University Board of Supervisors Meeting on July 16, 2021.
Dr. Toledo comes to the Ag Center from West Virginia State University (WVSU) where he served as a Professor of Economics, Finance and Marketing; the Vice President of Research and Public Service; and Dean and Director of Land-Grant Programs.
As the Vice President for Research and Public Service and Dean and Director of Land-Grant Programs, Toledo provides administrative leadership in the areas of Research and Extension.
He has been employed at WVSU since 2000, where he initially served in the role of Associate Dean for Research and Extension Programs, and Associate Vice President for Administration and Research. Dr. Toledo has served on many university committees at WVSU and is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, the 1890 Association of Research Directors, 1890 Association of Extension Administrators, the National Council for Research Administrators, and the National Association of International Educators. He was also appointed by the Governor as a member of the West Virginia Council of Science and Research and has served on the council since 2019.
Jose is a graduate of Universidad Autónoma Chapingo in Mexico, where he earned a degree in Agronomy and Engineering (Agro-industries) in 1991. He continued his graduate studies at the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign and earned concurrently the degrees of Master of Science in Plant Biotechnology and Business Administration in 1995. While at the University of Illinois, he also attained a dual doctoral degree in the areas of Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences and Business Administration (Strategic Business Management) in 2000.
