Updated: Oct 29, 2020

This Election Day was held on Saturday, August 15 that revealed nail-bitter election results and proposals passing.

One of those nail bitters was the election runoff for the Baton Rouge City Judge, ES 2, Div M, replacing District Judge Beau Higginbotham who held the seat previously. Attorney Tiffany Foxworth won the election by 27 votes. With 9,222 votes, she won the election against her opponent City Court Judge Yvette Alexander who had 9,195 votes. It was a close race, with Alexander leading the election up until the very end, with Foxworth securing the seat at the last few minutes.

Another nail bitter election was a seat for the Baker Council District 4. Robert Young won against Doris Alexander, winning the seat by 12 votes. Fred Allen won his seat as Jackson Marshal in the city of Ville Platte against Mark Dousay with just a mere 19 votes.

A local position up for election was for City Court Judge. Johnell Matthews and Whitney Higginbotham Greene were up against one another, with Matthews taking the win. He led the win with a 63% majority of the vote.

Acadiana had several propositions up for this election. One of them was the St. Landry Community Library District Proposition for tax renewal. The city has voted yes, which will authorize the continuation to levy a tax of five and 75 hundredths million on all property subject to taxation in the District for ten years. This will start in the year of 2022 and will end in the year of 2031. This new tax will improve, maintain, and operate the South St. Landry Community Library.

Ascension Parish passed the property tax proposition for mental health. This will allow a $2 million renewal for the next 10 years. As well as a $5.6 million 10-year library proposition, and the school district $14 million 20-year bond issue was passed for the parish.

It was reported that voting for this election was relatively low, with only 18.5% of a voting turnout for the city.
