Social Security is set to implement changes that will broaden access for applicants, a move expected to benefit a larger pool of individuals seeking assistance.
Effective September 30, the definition of a public assistance household will be expanded to encompass recipients of SNAP payments. Additionally, households with at least one SSI recipient and another member receiving public income maintenance will now fall under this classification.
According to officials, this expanded definition aims to increase the number of qualifying individuals and boost payment amounts for certain SSI recipients. Moreover, it is anticipated to alleviate reporting burdens for those residing in public assistance households.
Under the previous policy, all household members were required to be recipients of public assistance to qualify.
This update is one of several initiatives being rolled out by Social Security to enhance its program.
