BATON ROUGE - In a concerted effort to address food insecurity in the capital area, Rouses Markets has teamed up with Dairy MAX to donate essential supplies to Southern University's food pantry.
The collaboration comes at a critical time when food insecurity is on the rise, driven by escalating grocery costs. Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Dairy MAX has pledged a 64-gallon dairy fridge to the university, while Rouses Markets will contribute $8,000 worth of dairy products to stock it.
Moreover, Rouses has committed to a two-year partnership with the university to ensure a consistent supply of dairy items for the pantry's beneficiaries.
According to Michelle Van Pelt, Dairy MAX's business development manager, dairy foods such as milk, cheese, and yogurt are among the most requested yet least available items in food pantries. She emphasized the nutritional importance of these products, citing their provision of 13 essential nutrients, including high-quality protein and calcium.
The donation underscores the vital role of collaboration between local businesses and educational institutions in addressing pressing community needs.
The Jaguar EATS food pantry, where the donations will be utilized, is situated in the Student Success Center within the Magnolia Building.
